truth also isn't evil, it just is. it offers, and it takes. it doesn't actually want to harm people. but it must take away something for its deal. and I think Edward realized that by the end, and wasn't bitter. and in a way, Truth appreciated that. because someone finally understood it

I mean it’s still equivalent exchange. Ed wanted the person he loved the most back, and so lost the other person he loved the most. Same with Izumi. Ed “won” because he gave up alchemy and so the equivalent exchange is to get back everything he lost for alchemy.

It was established early on that the initial visit truth takes what he deems important to the character, each subsequent visit if something is taken something else must be given up so when Ed did it a second time he specifically gave up his arm to get Al’s soul. The final time he goes back Ed already knows truth requires a toll and truth wants to know what Ed will give up. This isn’t a plot hole people just don’t pay attention.

that's the cost, that's what he lost. its not a great mystery, he got his brother back in exchange for a fundamental part of his very soul, one that he can live without, but still something every human has that he now doesn't.

My thing is even though Al gave up his door to save his brother's life I would imagine he could still use alchemy but only through a transmutation circle. because his door gave him the ability to use transmutation without a circle because he understood the truth of alchemy so if he lost the door he would lose the truth but still be able to use alchemy like everybody else
