@thecartooncafe: Peter Lorre, born László Löwenstein, was born June 26, 1904 in Rózsahegy, Austria-Hungary (now Ružomberok, Slovakia). He fled Nazi Germany in the early '30s after his unsettling performance as a child killer in Fritz Lang's "M" (1931), and reinvented himself in Hollywood as the go-to voice and face for sinister, but sympathetic characters. He showed up a lot in animation. His bug eyes and whispery voice were basically an animator's dream, and Warner Bros. leaned in pretty dramatically starting with "Hollywood Steps Out" (1941) and his mad-scientist role as "Dr. Lorre" in "Hair-Raising Hare" (1946): the same short that we got Gossamer from. From there, he got drawn as everything from a duck to a maggot.
