bold strategy. is this a strategy to avoid taxes on the sale of the house? if the stock goes down he can deduct the loss from his income taxes.

thats been going on in the bay area for 30 years, minus the pre ipo stock. once a company from the bay area goes public, housing prices shoot through the roof and I have seen where sellers want only cash buyer. I work in the bay, grew up in the bay, now I am priced out of living in the bay. it sucks

I was living in San Francisco atthe tail end of the dotcom bubble. All the people who physically built the Internet were promised stock options. That bubble burst, and all those people were left with nothing. The fact that people are using unvested stock to purchase physical goods is a recipe for disaster.

Same thing happened during the dot-com boom. When everything went bust there were more apartments available, but landlords didn't lower prices, they took the opportunity to install granite countertops and renovate their empty units. Also, the best apartments in town remained unavailable, since the rent-control tenants were in it for the long haul.

At least Anthropic announced it will not consider secondary shares valid unless approved by their board. Imagine having sold your house for something turning out as worthless paper

San Francisco didn't invent speculation but it pushed it real close to perfection.

Just 3 years ago the housing market in San Francisco was dead (mainly because remote work).
