The Netherlands has a structured system for babies from the very beginning, and one of the first institutions you encounter is the consultatiebureau. It is part of the Dutch preventative healthcare structure and follows every child from birth until the age of four. It is not emergency care and it is not your huisarts. Instead, it focuses on monitoring growth, development and overall wellbeing. 📊 Once you register your baby’s birth at the stadhuis, your child is automatically enrolled with the nearest clinic. Around two weeks after birth, a nurse usually visits your home to explain how everything works, collect medical history and introduce you to the Groeiboek, where height, weight, milestones and vaccinations are recorded. During the first year, appointments are frequent. Babies are measured, weighed and assessed for development, and vaccinations are given there free of charge according to the national schedule. 💉 As your child grows, visits become less frequent and continue until primary school, when monitoring shifts to the school doctor. Attendance is strongly advised but not compulsory, and you are not required to follow every recommendation. The experience can vary significantly depending on the professional you see. My first experience with Maria as a baby was difficult, mainly because of one professional. I felt a lot of pressure around feeding, with repeated suggestions that breastmilk alone might not be enough. Maria has always been a slimmer child, consistently following her own growth curve and meeting her milestones, but as a first-time mum those appointments created real stress and anxiety. 😭 Later, I met another professional who was truly a breath of fresh air. Calm, supportive and evidence-based, she made everything feel clearer and far less overwhelming. The difference in approach changed my entire experience. With Bowie, it has been completely different from the start. The consultations have felt balanced, reassuring and genuinely helpful.
