your map says "British Possession of Canada" or "British Possessions in North America," you are looking at a historic map printed between 1763 and 1867.

Archivist here. Clean hands are the standard for handling objects NOT white cotton gloves. Nitrile gloves are usually recommended for photographic materials. Keep the map in cool temperatures to prevent mold growth and try to keep it unrolled and flattened to prevent further rips and tears. Check with your state government archives or local historical society for more information about the map! It definitely looks like a modern printed map, so that’s such an interesting find!

This is why everything is digital now. So much easier to change history. We really need to go back to having physical copies of things.

If you give it to anyone to restore have an attorney and insurance. Anyone who handles it should sign something agreeing that you are the owner.

You have to hurry and get this to an art historian or something so they can preserve it. The oxidation and your touching it is probably already doing damage lol

it looks like the 1733 map of the brittish empire ...some areas will overlap from French maps ....things were labeled differently because they weren't yet settled as we know today.
