Yep. I have an MS in Public Health, and I studied health disparities, social determinants of health (SDOH), and health inequities. Last year, my mom lost her battle with stage III cholangiocarcinoma. While on Medicare and undergoing chemotherapy, she lost her Medicaid coverage. I’m not saying that happened because she was Black. I’m saying systemic racism creates inequities that make Black patients more likely to face barriers to care and financial hardship. That’s exactly why these conversations matter.
