@theartofhealingbytrevor: If you’ve been working on yourself but your partner gets defensive when you encourage them to do the same, try this approach instead: 1️⃣ Remember that defensiveness often means they’re hearing your words through the lens of their own wounds, not necessarily what you actually meant. 2️⃣ Ask with curiosity: “When I said that, what message did you hear from me?” 3️⃣ Reflect back what you heard with empathy. For example: “So it feels like I’m saying you’re not good enough?” 4️⃣ Validate their experience before trying to explain yourself. “That makes sense. I can see why it would feel that way, and I imagine that really hurts.” 5️⃣ Give them space to respond. Don’t rush to defend yourself. 6️⃣ Ask permission before clarifying your intentions. “Can I try again and tell you what I really meant?” 7️⃣ Reassure them of your loving intention. Wanting your partner to heal isn’t saying they’re not enough, it’s an invitation to grow closer together and become a stronger team. When people feel understood before they’re corrected, they’re far more open to hearing your perspective. Validation lowers defensiveness and making real connection grow.
