they weren’t good parents and saying they were in any capacity is crazy. However in that moment, her mom knew she had the chance to give her daughter a life she wanted. Some of it may have been selfish but at least part of it was bc she wanted matilda to have a good life and it wasn’t the one she was living.

I actually think her mom loved her, which is why she let her go. She knew she couldn’t make Matilda happy because she would never give up parts of herself that kept hurting Matilda’s childhood. It’s sad but at least she was honest and did the decent thing to give her to someone who is more suited for Matilda and her childhood
