@nofret_egypt_: Luxor Temple - Pylon The monumental façade of Luxor Temple is dominated by the First Pylon, built by Ramesses II (c. 1279–1213 BC). Decorated with colossal seated statues of the king and reliefs of the Battle of Kadesh, it proclaimed his military achievements and divine kingship. Originally, two red granite obelisks flanked the entrance; one remains in its original position, while its counterpart was transported to Paris in the 19th century and now stands on the Place de la Concorde. The pylon is slightly offset from the temple’s original axis, a result of Ramesses II incorporating earlier structures, especially the triple barque shrine built by Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Although it became the monumental entrance of the temple, during the Opet Festival in Ramesses II’s time the divine barques travelled from Karnak along the Nile and entered Luxor Temple through the eastern entrance of the First Court, not through the pylon itself. #Egypt #History #mystery #travels #luxor
