I have taken the channel hovercraft a few times. It is expensive, extremely loud, and uncomfortably rough. It did have the advantage that it could carry cars—for a high price.

These used to go from Lee-on-the-Solent too, when I was a kid. They've just done a few flights recently, not sure if they're planning on making it a permanent crossing again.
