Still processing that this actually happened… I was about 10 minutes into my lesson working on backwards crossovers when my toe pick caught the ice as I was uncrossing my feet. My coach and I heard a pop as I went down. I had to army crawl off the ice (oh how I wish I had it on video). Went to clinic and x-ray showed my tibia (this was a spiral) and fibula broken. They said probably 6-8 weeks in a cast. Next day went to orthopedic specialist that said I could go 16 weeks (minimum) in a cast or have surgery. He referred me to a trauma specialist and I had to wait 4 days before I could see him. Three days later and my splint was causing me too much pain even with medication, so we went to the ER to see what they could do. After being in the waiting room for 5hrs, they took me to a room where I was told I’d be having surgery 7am the next morning. The surgery took roughly 2-3 hrs to complete and I woke up with metal holding my leg together. Three days in the hospital and I was sent home till my two week check up. It hasn’t been and won’t be fun or easy, but over time it will heal and I look forward to getting back on skates as soon as possible (it will be months). #brokenleg #learntoskate #adultskater #skatefail
