my headcanon is that the carbon steel fabric is sensitive to his electromagnetic field(all peeps have a weak one, even irl) and activating his quirk has the side effect of making his stronger. There are peeps that use biofeedback machines to train their magnetic field control in real life, to do little things like making metal stick to them for a sec, etc, so I imagine it's easier to do in a super hero society. Especially since he has an emitter style quirk, it would probably make his extend farther

I think the running theory as to his control is that he actually has a composite quirk: erasure and telekinesis. However, the telekinesis only works while erasure is active since it a composite and not two seperate quirks, hence why his hair floats.

Old voice aizawa’s scarf felt so ridiculous with how it worked. It frustrated me to know end how it just kinda floated around. Once the new VA took over, they seemed to have actually made it kinda ‘normal’ where it looks more like he’s just manipulating it extremely well and not just magic
