I did this too and he said it was like I “hated him”. I told him imagine how I feel.

roommate marriage is writing off a chance at someone treating you like you're special and actually cherished and wanted. that's a hard pass for me

This sounds like she managed her expectations and is now happier because she does things for herself

I can’t imagine not still building resentment for someone who was unwilling to change the things I had voiced that bother me…

This is the solution, not communication. Mirroring back to them their actions.

She’s comfortable, they get along, he’s a good father, and it’s a longer process to get a divorce. I get it.

I love how she understood that the objective of decentering him was to direct her own energy towards herself instead of trying to get him to put more effort into her. That’s why she was able to still be content even when he wasn’t changing.

This is how all marriages become eventually and honestly this is how it is supposed to be. You don't need to be fusing your core to another person to be happy in their companionship

to me it sounds kind of like they've fallen out of romantic love and are now closer to friendly coparents. weird as it sounds I think it sounds like one of the more positive outcomes, neither of them resent the other so thats pretty good. personally the only downside is having to share the house and potentially bed on occasion with someone else, but she seems to enjoy that aspect so if it works for her then thats great

I feel like she understands her husband isn’t good enough but because she’s content, she’s ok with her situation. It’s like she doesn’t really have to deal with him and she likes that. Good luck to her.

Honestly this sounds like a healthy way to co-habitate with someone who you trust with your kids, will split finances 50/50 and who you generally get along with. It doesn’t sound like they love each other anymore but so what? At least their child’s life isn’t being disrupted by a divorce.

this is what people mean when they say romance isn't enough. you have to be ok with being companions and in eachother spaces

Honestly I don’t understand what people find wrong with this? It seems she was unhappy and wanted to stay married. So she changed her actions and life to become happier, which she is now, and she still wants to be married (for very valid reasons such as finances and quality of life, which is a super responsible thing to prioritize when you’re a parent). Who cares that they don’t have this “amazing” love? Honestly that is so rare that it’s a bit childish to expect something like that. If she’s content now, then that’s all that matters. I commend her for making responsible choices and choosing to change her life to be happier. We should all be so self-aware and responsible!! 👏👏

From experience with almost precisely this dynamic, it works when your child is little; it gets harder when they get older and start commenting on any unexpressed emotions they’re picking up on. Kids will find your weaknesses and poke at them. The worst of it is if the child loses respect for the parents; kids don’t always understand your reasons for doing things the way you do them. All they see is what their friends have, and if what you have makes sense to them in comparison.
