It's tied to American consumerism and late stage capitalism. Everything in the US is a brand, everything has to be part of a company. So when they see "FIFA world cup" they think it's just called FIFA because almost everything in the US is brand name

ngl I call it fifa 💀 Because I follow multiple sports it doesn't make sense to me to just call it "the world cup". I would say "the fifa world cup" (because that's what it's officially called), but that's long. so fifa it is.
