Engine Won’t Turn Over… What Seized Inside This Renault R9M? • In this video, we work on a 2015 Renault Trafic III equipped with the 1.6 dCi R9M diesel engine with approximately 400,000 km on the odometer. • The vehicle was delivered to the workshop on a tow truck because the engine would no longer start. During cranking, an unusual mechanical noise could be heard and the engine appeared to partially lock up while turning over. • Manual rotation of the crankshaft confirmed that there was indeed a mechanical obstruction somewhere inside the engine, indicating a serious internal problem. • In this video, we begin the full diagnosis and inspection process to determine the cause of the failure and assess the extent of any internal damage. • Particular attention is given to the timing chain system because the timing chain was already replaced approximately two years ago, and the engine has covered more than 50,000 km since that repair. • One useful indicator of timing chain wear on the R9M engine is the extension of the hydraulic chain tensioner piston. • On a new timing chain system, the tensioner piston typically extends around 10-12 mm.
