lots of people in the comments don't understand how BVR works. this was a dedicated strike; they caught the SU35 doing air patrols in Russian airspace and set up this "ambush". the Swedish AWACS aircraft (hundreds of KM away from everything) detected the SU35, as expected, about 150miles from the F16. Now the cool part is, the F16 never had to lock the target. The AWACS identifies and locks the target for the F16, far outside it's normal range with much greater precision. This also means, the SU35 had no idea it was under attack and had no chance at identifying either aircraft
