For years, I listened to Republicans attack Obama’s Iran deal as the worst agreement in history. They said releasing Iranian assets and negotiating limits on Iran’s nuclear program was appeasement. They called it weakness. They called it surrender. Now we’re looking at reports of a new deal that could include $24 Billion in unfrozen Iranian assets and discussions of a reconstruction fund that could reach $300 Billlion. Meanwhile, the stronger nuclear restrictions that existed under the Obama agreement appear to be absent or deferred to future negotiations. So help me understand the difference. If Obama’s deal was supposedly a disaster, how is this better? If handing Iran access to billions was unacceptable then, why is it acceptable now? If America is expected to help finance reconstruction after military action, why are we always told there’s no money for healthcare, Social Security, infrastructure, veterans, or struggling American families? The hypocrisy is impossible to ignore. In my opinion, if the criticism was valid then, it should be valid now. And if this deal is truly a better deal, then the administration should release the full details and let the American people judge for themselves. Accountability shouldn’t depend on which party is in power.
