Survivors later recalled that the music helped bring comfort and calm during the chaos, even as the ship’s final moments approached. None of the eight band members survived. Their bodies were never all recovered, but Wallace Hartley’s was found two weeks later with his violin case still strapped to him. The violin had been a gift from his fiancée, Maria Robinson, making it one of the most poignant symbols of the Titanic tragedy.
