Muhammad Auwal Albani Zaria was a respected Nigerian Islamic scholar and preacher who was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, around 1960. He earned the nickname "Albani" because of his deep interest in the works of the renowned Albanian Islamic scholar Muhammad Nasiruddin al-Albani. From an early age, he devoted himself to studying the Qur'an, Hadith, Arabic language, and Islamic jurisprudence. Sheikh Auwal Albani became one of Nigeria's most influential Salafi scholars. He preached mainly in Hausa and Arabic, making Islamic teachings accessible to ordinary people. His lectures were widely distributed through cassettes, CDs, radio broadcasts, and later online platforms. Thousands of students and followers attended his lessons, particularly in Zaria. He emphasized following the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He encouraged Muslims to seek knowledge, avoid superstition, uphold justice, and maintain good character. He also criticized religious extremism and repeatedly warned young people against joining violent groups that claimed to act in the name of Islam. On the evening of 1 February 2014, Sheikh Auwal Albani was driving home in Zaria with his family after delivering a lecture. Armed men attacked his vehicle and opened fire. The Sheikh was killed at the scene. One of his wives was also killed in the attack, while one of his children survived despite being injured. His assassination shocked Muslims across Nigeria and beyond. Religious leaders, students, and community members mourned his death and condemned the attack. Although there has been much public discussion about who was responsible, no court has definitively established responsibility for the killing. Today, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Albani Zaria is remembered as a courageous scholar who dedicated his life to teaching Islam, promoting authentic Islamic knowledge, and warning against violence and extremism. His recorded lectures continue to be studied by many Muslims in Nigeria and around the world, and his legacy remains influential among students of Islamic knowledge.
