To answer @Hasan Minhaj's question, the reason it is such a loaded term here in the UK is because it was associated with very real violence towards South Asians. In the 1970s, hunting down brown people to beat up as a 'fun' activity was known as "paki bashing", and that attitude is still alive today. In the 1980s my uncle was called a paki as he was stabbed to death in his school playground, and even as recently as 2025 and 2026, "paki" was used against victims of physical attacks on South Asian Brits in Barry in Wales, Birmingham, and other areas.

It’s used in Canada. It explained to me by an Indian friend back in the 80’s. It’s short for “Pakistan”. India and Pakistan don’t like each other very much and people from India dislike being called that because they dislike Pakistan so much and don’t want to be compared to them.

Unfortunately, it’s still used so much here in Canada. I constantly have to remind my father (who I am not close with by the way) that we do not refer to anyone with that or any slur 🥺

As an Japanese descendant who grew up in South America, I don’t put meaning to racist slurs. I make them explain to me exactly what they meant and how do they want me to react 😁

I saw from a podcast that discusses this, slurs hurt even as adults/ even when became successful bc subconsciously we made it as part of our identity. The moment we learn to distance ourselves from that, then it will be just another words.

Love this interview!! 👏 It’s not right and that racial slur does still cause harm within but no matter what kind of status you have, hurt people will always hurt people.
