@sflyermd: Have to say when I worked out West in a big city, there was little to no tension/attitude from the nurses. We had lots of Filipino nurses though so this likely played a role. These views are MY OPINION due to my experiences and also in discussing these with my female physician/minority physician colleagues. The FMG thing has just mostly been my observation. FMGs comprise a very small fraction of doctors in this country. #medtok #nursetok #healthcare #doctor #nurse
I’m an black ICU nurse at a top 10 hospital and whew…🙂↕️

Girl preach. And all the black nurses on here have several stories about being undermined by white nurses and being shut of specialties by other white nurse but are so ready to go again dr Carter.

As a 4th yr med student, the thing I fear the most about residency is the tension that exists between nurses & doctors..

I’m a nurse and I went from a city hospital in Philly to a small VA in the burbs. My coworkers are so much nicer now and I don’t despise going to work every day 😭

I found the original video. Just want to say had an emergency happen at church. Nurses were there first somebody came and got me and once I got there one of the nurses said - you’re not apart of the nurses unit. I was like what? When will I ever be bahaha . It’s called scope of practice. Another situation actually happened at a VP Harris rally. ED physician had to announce themselves several times before the nurses backed off and let her lead (Physician was a black female)

i really respect your nuanced takes because experience really is the best teacher. overall that whole video gave strange because the approach was off, if we see things as “i’m a nurse/doctor i got this” instead of “i’m a nurse/doctor what can i do to assist” we’ll never be able to work as a team

That’s wild 80% would’ve never guessed. Definitely figured a large majority but that’s mind boggling.

The beef just comes from ego whether they are NP or MD. Respect is what is needed and understanding of other fields is what is important. What I’ve been seeing is that other healthcare fields don’t want to learn what others do and just want to be arrogant and egotistical toward each other.

Original doc story that I heard didn’t include race. I think the response she got would’ve been different if she included that as her reasons why she felt like her authority was challenged. We definitely need more diversity in nursing. Def progress to be made.

I agree her delivery wasn't the best. I understand her point. Speaking as a Black female Orthopaedic surgery resident. On the flip end the nurses who treat me well have really helped me through this journey 🙏🏽

You’re not wrong at all. I also think coming into healthcare as a much older nurse (was nearly 40 when I started ) I came in with a very different mindset. I wanted lots of teamwork, I wanted doctors to teach me what I didn’t know and I thought them what they didn’t know . (I worked in peds and had 3 grown kids most of who I worked with were residents so it was life skills, and behavioral skills especially with kids with autism and teens) so it was team work from the start. Working nights we got to get to know each other and really they came to me for all kinds of stuff and I worked with them and the attending to deep dive into patho and learn to really look at big picture stuff. I really think being new and older helped to minimize my ego. I knew what I was really good at and knew what I needed a lot to learn and I was /am more than happy to learn. Like a new 1st year telling me how much an infant should eat every 3 hours on the dot from a text box vs my 20+ years as a mom then daycare provider before a nurse. I got to help with real world vs book to someone who never held a baby outside of the hospital and she got to go over the medications the kid was on and why it’s critical to time it with feeds and hold off feedings for so long etc . Team work.
