it depends if it doesn't make sense on then its a separate issue having a good diag tech can keep you from eating the cost on stuff that you don't need to be eating if they don't like that a maf failed after repairs they can pound sand you have bills to pay and people to pay you can't do that running charity

Stop doing head gaskets. Just replace the engine.

Never take a car apart until you have parts on hand if that part wasn’t available for months you would have been in a tough position

Doctors are not on a stop watch timer and if they fix it on the first time they charge you again and again and again. Till they get it correct.

you can't really charge labor 2x and still have a customer. i wouldn't necessarily say you can not take a car apart before parts arrive, but I will say at least know when they will be there (expected). example part is 5 days out, tear it down say 4 or 5.

the maf was likely due to the head gasket. that part didnt just fail on a whim, oil blowback is an issue, but that little sensor is so finicky that it is more likely than not it got messed up being off the car and not covered for so long. The Porsche, nah you gotta charge them extra labor on that, that's on them. At the end of the day, you'll never make anyone happy, try to avoid telling them the billable hours until the end

As a tech, for the returning check engine light for a different fault just make sure your guys are making thorough documentation about the faults that are in the vehicle at the time of arrival with picture proof. The customer is going to be upset regardless because most of the time they are not working in this industry so everything that goes wrong after the repair is the shops fault. Having someone who has great customer skills will be able to handle the customer to the best of their ability. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. You can explain everything the best you can but you can’t make the customer agree.

Charge them to diagnose all issues then have them select what they want fixed. If fixing one thing uncovered another issue let them know while the car is torn apart and say you can fix it for price of the part minus 1 hour of labor since you’re already there.

It’s good you ate the cost of the MAF sensor. When they put that kind of money into the car, just comp something like that

ROBB BIG LESSON AS A MECHANIC is scan the vehicle before starting work! Customers will blame you for pre existing issues. Make sure to document your preexisting codes so you don’t come out of pocket. Not saying that’s the case here but ALWAYS cover yourself.

Focus on minor repairs and let go of the major repairs. From my experience big jobs are really good for a specialty shop that’s deals only with major repairs. You are doing more than you can handle and you need to horn in on just in n out repairs and you’ll have less head aches. Good luck

It depends. The first factor is figuring out if its negligence, an unforeseeable consequence of removing a part, or a lack of being thorough when creating the estimate. From there it’s about doing whatever you feel is “the right thing” to do.

20 min test drive is the issue. also yes these things take time but good techs are efficient, not saying they aren't good techs but they may still be learning. Just normal growing pains.

Keep your pricing updated and quote confidently. Not all money is good money—find your niche, focus on the right customers, and stick to the jobs you enjoy. Can’t charge the labor twice. You should only start working on the car when you have all the parts. Not fair to the customer that you can’t keep to the time frame you gave them.
