There is no contradiction in the two accounts. What Genesis 5 is doing is, it is establishing the two main streams of mankind after the introduction of sin. Notice that Abel is dead at this point and Cain is rejected and cursed by God. To still progress with the divine plan and purpose for which man was created in the first place, another male child is given Adam through whose subsequent line the plan of redemption is to be played out until the son of God Himself comes to the scene to deal with the problem of sin. This is in a nut shell. We can expound on this further if needed but we are not here to argue.
