HR here: the Fair Labor Standards Act requires an unpaid meal break within the first 6 hours of work. Can be a minimum of 30 minutes.

This is not a popular opinion but I refuse to skip my lunch break. I do not care about a pat on the back for working through breaks or working overtime. No one cares about you at that company - make sure to set boundaries for yourself.

It’s called labor laws y’all. All jobs are required to give you a break after so many hours of work. If people just didn’t take a break and held it til the end you could try to sue your company for withholding breaks and if it’s legit they can get in big trouble.

The last job I had full time in an office we could leave early to skip lunch but not 2 days in a row so basically 3 days per week because they worried it would be too much left for the people coming on call for night shifts

When I worked in office, I’d take a 30 and not an hour and be out early. I switched it up often so other folks couldn’t figure out what I was doing and would try to start doing it too.

The majority of jobs do not give you an hour lunch. Almost all hourly jobs get a 30 min unpaid lunch.

This used to be a lot more common that companies allowed this. The fact that companies want people in office and are demanding very specific hours is simply control. Previously if you worked your 40 hours and completed your work nobody said anything.

California has very strict laws about this. You must take a minimum 30 min unpaid break before your 5th hour.

I found a job that lets me do that. I work 7-3 and eat lunch at my desk while working. If I want to take a real lunch I can.
