When I was young my dad taught me that when you drive someone home you wait for them to get in the door before you drive away. I’m 38. I think about it every time I drive someone home. These types of lessons learned in childhood last forever. I will add this to my core values to instill with my child.

I taught my kids this lesson. We brought one of their Black friends on a trip with us. I made it clear to their friend if they were uncomfortable in any space, we leave. Without question or hesitation. I acknowledged their friend would see things I might not and I deferred to their sense of safety. I was honored to have been entrusted with their safety.

Acknowledgement of our differences is so important. My son’s friend was waiting for his ride after practice and was the only one left. I told him we can wait with him or call his mama to see if I can bring him home but he’s not waiting by himself, I don’t care how old he is.
