Inception (2010) directed by Christopher Nolan, features one of its most mind-bending practical effects in the mirror scene between Cobb and Ariadne. Instead of relying purely on CGI, Nolan used two massive real mirrors, each around 15 feet tall and weighing nearly 2.5 tons, to create the illusion of infinite reflections. The scene was carefully staged so the actors could interact naturally with the reflections, making it feel grounded and believable. Filming with real mirrors meant the camera crew would normally be visible, so DNEG digitally removed the crew and equipment from the reflections, seamlessly blending practical footage with subtle VFX. This combination of real-world effects and invisible digital work became a defining strength of the film. And yes, Inception went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, proving how powerful that balance between practical filmmaking and VFX can be. #cinema #christophernolan #inception #vfx #filmmaking
