not that “ipad kids” are bad (bc they aren’t) my kids love a good show. we have the cheap little ipads that glitch half the time but are lifesavers for travel. i’m not anti-screen. sometimes i need the quiet too. but watching them run around the neighborhood until it’s dark just does something to me. their bare feet, scraped knees, asking for snacks before dinner, popsicles, a whole pack of kids going house to house, bikes thrown in the driveway, no one checking the time just going inside when it gets dark. it feels a lot like my childhood which is so refreshing in a thick social media society. it makes me check myself. because while they’re out there fully living, it’s so easy for me to stay inside finishing work, answering emails, scrolling, staying in my “productive” mode. but these nights make me put my phone down, close my laptop and turn off my work brain. i get to sit in a lawn chair and actually be present. get to know my neighbors and their kids. this is the stuff they’ll remember too and hopefully they pass it down. you’re sign to just turn off the tv, give the kids a bike and watch them figure it out.
