@gardenary: Don’t touch those tomato suckers! If you want more tomatoes, you’ve got to let the suckers grow. These shoots will branch and create more tomatoes instead of just leaves. So if you want more tomatoes, not bigger tomatoes, stop cutting them! I’m not pruning anything unless it’s dead, dying or infected. Leaves are what convert fertilizer into plant food through photosynthesis and their storage tanks for mobile nutrients. Unless it’s undergoing senescence or hitting me as I walk by, it stays put.

this is.. partly true. this depends on whether your tomato cultivar is a determinate or I determinate type. if they're determinate like sweet 100s, or whatever(look up your kind)... you do NOT cut the suckers, they have a 'set' fruiting period and size typically. on the flip side, indeterminate cultivars will grow indefinitely from suckers and will grow monstrously large and the suckers will drain the plants energy and nutrients into few fruit and LOADS of green growth.

I do this too. I’ve had suckers produce fruit, whereas the older branches just shrivel, get old and die

Don't do this unless you have to or live in the right zone. This is very detrimental to plant health. every trim is an open wound.

Wait a minute doesn’t it depend on if it’s a determinant or in determinant tomato plant? So cherry tomato plants keep the suckers.

the suckers is where fruit grows from in my view. I only prune what's low for better circulation that's it

I trim both until the plant gets part way up the trellis and then I let it spread out from there. Much easier for me to manage that way
