I didn’t decide on a major, I wanted to try things out see where I felt “in place.” Nothing ever stood out to me. I was declared the child that would never mount up to anything. But now I found a path that I like and I feel is right. There is room for growth, advancement and I get to help others grow and advance too.

I love this! I remember a commercial from like the late 70’s and kids were answering this question. The only response I remember is the kid who said “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, so don’t bug me” I was so relieved to hear him say that because I didn’t know at the time, either. 😂

Yes!! This is why I urge new grads to start with big company experience and then leave early on to join start ups. You’ll have so much more opportunity to try new things and experience different roles so you can figure out what you enjoy doing and what really isn’t for you. Much harder to do this in a large organization where you typically follow a structured career path. A lot of successful startups with strong growth potential hire talent from big companies to sell expertise as their value add, so it’s important to get that big name career experience first!

I am 54. I worked as a teacher of English and German as foreign languages, as a lifeguard, as an accountant and now as an IT auditor and tax and customs inspector. I have three degrees and I still keep my childhood dream of studying history and becoming an archeologist or devote myself to drawing. When people ask me if I feel schizo, I remember Whitman. We can contain multitudes. It was hard to change, but satisfying all the way. And I’m not done yet. So many things to try.
