these comments misunderstand kaufman just as much as mckee did. Kaufman asked, what if somebody wrote a story where the characters face on unlimited CONFLICTS without resolution much as life happens in the real world?
Mckee, however, understood it as, what if somebody wrote a movie without something going on?
THE CONFLICT UNRESOLVED AND THUS NOTHING HAPPENING TO THE CHARACTERS EXCEPT FRUSTRATIONS AND SUFFERING
is NOT EQUAL to
NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE STORY, NO CONFLICTS, NO PLOT STRUCTURE, NO CHARACTER ARCS.
the point was that thank god kaufman didnt listen bc mckee was awfully stupid

I hate the speakers response, mostly because it seems to misunderstand the question to make a point

Manchester by the Sea and Aftersun are examples of this. McKee totally misunderstood the question which always irks me.

I love how the movie becomes a straightforward thriller after he begs McKee for screenwriting advice

Such a good speech. Shit, like I've read the real Robert McKee's book, and like he goes into this in some sort of detail, but the real Charlie Kaufman's genius is distilling that into something so comparatively short.

I’ve had too many talks with writers who think “conflict” is inherently bad and try to make a play or film without it. From now on, THIS is the only answer 🥰

I don’t believe conflict is the core of all stories. Change is. Conflict is just the flashiest catalyst. Lot of good people stir destructive amounts of needless conflict on a false premise that it’s good for their plot; that it’s the only way to resolve their story.

I love the perspective. To say that you're creating a story where nothing much happens in a very literal sense is to miss the fact that every second of every day something happens. He highlights terrible things, but the sun rises, the sun sets, dew dries, leaves fall from a tree. Things happen and we should acknowledge these seemingly small things to know we are alive. And as a screenwriter trying to create a story where nothing much happens truly can't be done unless you know what it's like to live, because you know what it means to live, and therefore also know what it means to not.
