Yesterday, I joined stakeholders in Accra for the launch of the World Health Organization (WHO) PROTECT Technical Package for Drowning Prevention, a timely initiative aimed at reducing drowning-related deaths through evidence-based interventions. As the Member of Parliament for Pru East, a constituency that depends heavily on the Volta Lake for transportation and livelihoods, this issue is deeply personal. We have witnessed the devastating impact of fatal boat accidents, including the heartbreaking tragedy along the Yeji–Kongo route earlier this year that claimed the lives of nine people, including women and children. While government has a responsibility to provide policy direction, strengthen regulations, and invest in water safety infrastructure, we must also recognize that preventing drowning requires collective responsibility. Boat operators, fisherfolk, passengers, and every community member have a role to play by observing safety measures, especially the consistent use of life jackets. In Pru East, my office has partnered with the Ghana Navy to educate residents on water safety and drowning prevention, while also distributing life jackets to vulnerable communities. These interventions are important, but they must be complemented by stronger national policies, effective enforcement, continuous public education, and improved rescue systems. Every life lost to drowning is one too many. Let us all commit to making our waterways safer and protecting the lives of our people. #PruEastMP #fyp #parliament #bonoeastregion #viral
