On October 22, 2013, 24-year-old mathematics teacher Colleen Ritzer was killed inside Danvers High School in Massachusetts by 14-year-old student Philip Chism. The case shocked the nation and became one of the most disturbing crimes ever committed on school grounds in the United States. Earlier that day, classes had ended as usual, and Ritzer remained at school. Surveillance footage later showed Chism following her into a school restroom during the afternoon. Investigators determined that he attacked her with a box cutter he had brought to school. Security cameras captured much of what happened afterward, including Chism leaving the restroom, changing clothes, and later returning with a large rolling recycling bin. Authorities concluded that Chism used the container to move Ritzer’s body out of the building and into a wooded area behind the school’s athletic fields, where he attempted to conceal it. When Ritzer failed to return home that evening, concern quickly grew, prompting a search by family members and law enforcement. During the investigation, police discovered evidence inside the restroom and reviewed surveillance recordings that helped reconstruct the sequence of events. In the early hours of October 23, officers located Ritzer’s body in the wooded area behind the school. Chism was arrested shortly afterward near a local roadway. Investigators reported that he was carrying items belonging to the victim, including her cellphone and credit cards. The case revealed additional evidence that prosecutors argued demonstrated planning before the attack. Because of the severity of the crime, Chism was tried as an adult. In 2016, a jury convicted him of first-degree murder, aggravated rape, and armed robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison and will not be eligible for parole until serving at least 40 years of his sentence.
