This is exactly what I’ve been saying all along: respect for one another matters.Even if immigration officers have a legitimate reason to visit a business to make inquiries or verify documents, the manner of approach matters just as much as the purpose of the visit. One of our biggest problems in Nigeria is that many people in positions of authority forget that every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity. We often disrespect one another, look down on people, and act as though holding public office places us above everyone else. It doesn’t.The day we begin to treat people with courtesy, professionalism, and mutual respect is the day our institutions will begin to earn the public’s trust, and our country will start functioning the way it should.Imagine walking into a store owned by people who have lived here for years, paid their taxes, and contributed to the economy. If your duty is to verify documents, then do exactly that professionally. Why resort to intimidation, shouting, or unnecessary displays of power? Public office is not a license to bully people.Public officers are employed to serve the public, not to intimidate them. Authority should be exercised with integrity, humility, and respect. Professionalism is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of a system that respects the rule of law.Nigeria deserves institutions that enforce the law firmly but treat every person with dignity.
