@terraencyclopedia: On October 12, 539 BC, Cyrus the Great did the impossible. Babylon — the largest, most fortified city on earth — fell in a single night. His strategy: divert the Euphrates River. His troops marched along the dry riverbed, straight into the city through the water gates. The Babylonians were at a festival, dancing in the city center, completely unaware. The city was so vast that citizens in the middle hadn't heard the news by the time Persian soldiers were already inside. Cyrus then issued the Cyrus Cylinder — history's first declaration of human rights — freed all captive peoples, and entered Babylon "in peace, amidst joy and jubilation.
