When it costs $100-200 to just step outside anymore $7.25/hr doesn’t cut it anymore

My neice who is the tail end of Gen Z, says "We have nothing to look forward to. We will never own a home. We can't afford an education, even if we want one, which most of us don't because we see how pointless that has been. We can't afford food, a car, Healthcare or even basic hygiene care. Most of the people my age, give up, why make yourself better when there is NOTHING to be better for." And my heart breaks, because this is what we have left them, because we didn't do better. 🥺

My first job I made about 400 a week as an admin asst. My studio apartment (in Hollywood CA) was 525 a month. That same apartment goes for 1500 now. I bet an admin asst is not making 1200 a week.

You’re forgetting the fact that a lot of us either lived in a studio with hammy down furniture or thrift store furniture. Or had roommates. Now they will not live in the lower rent apartments because it doesn’t have the coffee bar and it doesn’t have the nice kitchen or the nice pool. They want what we had later immediately. We didn’t have $1000 phones. We did not have seven dollar coffees.

Yup. When I first worked at Best Buy I got a 30% bonus every month we hit our goal. Now they don’t have any bonuses.

I am completely agree with you that cost of living changed drastically. But what’s the solution of that? Not to work? Who is going to pay bills?

They’re probably still paying $10/hr with half or none of previous commissions

I’m almost 40 and still am not making enough. I’ve been forced to work in a bunch of low end jobs even after going to school :/ it sucks. Even working in a department store, I never received any commission for selling electronics or opening credit cards, it was just expected at $16 an hour in 2022.

12 years ago I worked 2 jobs making minimum wage. My part time job paid my share of the rent and phone bill. My full-time paid for food and my shopping addiction.

30 years ago I worked at a grocery store. $6.19 an hour, time and a half on Sundays. It pays $7 and change an hour now. Can’t make that make any damn sense.

$11 an hour with full time, was able to rent a room for 500 and minimal expenses but had phone. I was broke a lot, but cost of fun wa cheap!! cover fees like $5 and drinks for up to $10 at most and i just needed 2. movies? we'd spent $15 with ticket and popcorn and drink per person. now it's $30 or more per person, tickets alone are $25 per person

11 years ago I could live in a studio apartment on 12 an hour. the money I made now at 33 would have brought me a house at 22. but now it's low enough I'm in public housing.

you were making more money than my first professional job as a paralegal assistant. I made $10 an hour flat and discourage from working overtime

Sounds like when I first started out 40 years ago. That’s probably why I had 8 roommates in a 3 bedroom
