Cold Winters Theory. The Cold Winters Theory is a controversial evolutionary hypothesis associated most prominently with psychologist Richard Lynn, which attempts to explain differences in average cognitive-test performance among human populations by proposing that living in colder, more seasonal environments created stronger pressures for planning, problem-solving, foresight, and other cognitive skills. The basic argument is that humans who migrated from warmer regions into northern Eurasia encountered a more demanding seasonal environment: winters could limit the availability of food, require people to preserve and store resources, and make adequate clothing, shelter, heating, and coordinated hunting necessary for survival. According to the theory, these challenges may have favored individuals who were better able to anticipate future conditions and solve novel problems, with such traits supposedly becoming more common over many generations. Proponents have pointed to correlations between temperature and national-level intelligence-test scores, as well as archaeological observations that technological and behavioral complexity sometimes increased in colder environments, as evidence that environmental difficulty could have played a role in human cognitive evolution. However, these observations do not establish that cold winters caused differences in cognitive ability, and the theory remains highly disputed. One major problem is that correlations between climate and test scores can have many alternative explanations, including differences in education, nutrition, disease burden, wealth, political institutions, migration, urbanization, and the quality and cultural comparability of intelligence testing. Indeed, research examining temperature and intelligence within the United States has found that temperature can correlate with test scores even when racial composition is controlled, a finding that illustrates an important limitation of the theory: evolutionary selection cannot easily explain differences among populations whose ancestors have not undergone sufficiently different evolutionary histories in the relevant environment. Another difficulty is that human societies have repeatedly demonstrated sophisticated technological, agricultural, mathematical, architectural, and political achievements in warm and tropical environments, while extremely cold environments have not automatically produced the most technologically or economically advanced societies. This makes it difficult to treat temperature alone as a general measure of environmental challenge. Furthermore, the theory can be criticized for assuming that humans respond to environmental difficulty primarily through genetic evolution in cognitive ability when cultural adaptation is extraordinarily important; people can respond to winter through cooperation, food storage, clothing, architecture, agriculture, technology, and accumulated knowledge without requiring substantial genetic changes in intelligence. The theory is also controversial because some versions have been used to interpret racial differences in intelligence, which makes careful separation of empirical evidence from broader assumptions about race especially important. A more cautious interpretation is that seasonality and environmental variability may have influenced the kinds of skills, technologies, and social institutions that human populations developed, but that is considerably different from claiming that cold climates straightforwardly made particular populations more intelligent.
