This is Queen Ahmose-Nefertari, the Great Royal Wife of King Ahmose I, the founder of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and the ruler who expelled the Hyksos. She was the daughter of Seqenenre Tao II and Queen Ahhotep, and the mother of King Amenhotep I. Her mummy was discovered in the Deir el-Bahari Royal Cache (DB320) in 1881 and is now displayed at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Cairo. When researchers examined her mummy, they made a remarkable discovery. Part of her natural hair had survived, and braided human hair extensions had been added to make it appear fuller—one of the earliest known examples of hair extensions in history. But her greatest mystery appears in ancient Egyptian art. Ahmose-Nefertari was frequently portrayed with deep black skin, leading to centuries of debate.
