Native to the cold grasslands and rocky mountains of Central Asia, this elusive wild cat is perfectly adapted to some of the harshest environments on Earth. Measuring just 18–26 inches (46–65 cm) long and weighing 5–10 pounds (2.5–4.5 kg), the Pallas’s Cat is about the size of a domestic cat—but far stockier. It has the densest fur of any wild feline, helping it survive freezing winters at elevations above 15,000 feet (4,500 meters). Its flattened ears sit low on the sides of its head, allowing it to stay hidden while stalking prey like pikas, voles, and small birds. Unlike fast-running cats, the Pallas’s Cat relies on patience and camouflage. It stays motionless among rocks and grass until the perfect moment to ambush its target. Solitary, secretive, and incredibly difficult to spot in the wild, this tiny hunter has mastered the art of disappearing.
