When my patients think they’re getting that 23g butterfly but I actually use the 21g

As a phlebotomist I prefer butterfly’s bc it’s easier to swap tubes

Mine are so bad that you always have to use an ultrasound machine to find a vein.😂😂

Yk I’ve never understood that. I’d rather have my phlebotomist have a set up that they’re most comfortable with so I don’t run the risk of getting poked a bunch lol.

When I worked outpatient. I would tell people, butterfly and straight stick. It’s the same size needle 😭 we had to save the smaller needles for when absolutely needed

I educate my patients that there’s no such thing. I’m the ER nurse who ruins it for them and tells them it’s the shape of it and that they come in the same size needles. lol.

I never understood wanting a smaller needle. Even after becoming a phleb and being pricked a lot for training, 21g straight needle feels the same as a 23g butterfly.

Part of your job is making sure your patients are comfortable. My mom and my best friend experience vasovagal syncope with any kind of needle, wouldn’t you rather take the extra time than have your patient experience that? More work for you.

ER nurse here, I've honestly never used a straight needle in my life, it's either a cannula (most of the time) or a butterfly in some cases 😅 If you're only drawing blood and don't need an IV access, I don't understand why it would be such a problem to use a butterfly if it makes the patient less anxious 🤷♀️I don't have the choice to put in a cannula most of the time so I explain why I can't use a butterfly, but between a straight needle and a butterfly, there's no difference in the outcome, and the butterfly is easier to use 💁🏻♀️

if a butterfly makes you feel better , as an RN that does phlebotomy daily in fine with it. imma still like you with a minimum 21G but it can be butterfly. because im not a jerk. half of needle anxiety is perception

If it makes the patient more comfortable then use it in my opinion.

It’s crazy to me how some phlebotomists say that they haven’t used straight needles in years. At my hospital lab, each of us only get ten butterflies a week so we try to only use them if we’re drawing for tubes that can’t be drawn with straight needles or if we have to call PICC team which are our last resort for hardstick patients.

I never ask but butterfly is less painful regardless of size. The tube swapping is the part that is uncomfortable with the standard needles.
