I’ve known so many people that grew up in the IFLB and none of them have good stories. While my own church denomination as not nearly so bad, I can relate to a lot of the oppression. It’s just fertile ground for this kind of abuse.

I am so sorry you and your siblings went through this! I also went through religious trauma and grew up in a cult😭. My dad was a deacon too and my grandpa an elder.

I grew up in a little country Methodist church. I feel this big time. My dad is still always on my case about not getting to heaven. It’s exhausting

I have felt led to go back to my church growing up recently. They weren’t crazy and helped my family and removed my narc abusive step father. The church wasn’t the problem for me. Seeing you on my fyp and sitting in the old pews with that same church smell is stirring up a lot. Because before everything was out in the open. He was respected. He was a church leader. Men looked up to him as an example of godliness. Meanwhile I was dreading the car ride. Meanwhile I was hyper aware of my actions in church as to not embarrass him. (I’d get in trouble for yawning) I’d try to police my fidgety brother so he wouldn’t get yelled at as much.

This happened to my mom and ex stepdad. He was also a black veteran he was treated terribly. It caused so many issues. They divorced because it got bad. Thankfully I’m an atheist and moved away from organized religion. I have an amazing partner/husband.
