@coachmontessori: Children’s choices matter. 🤍 Even when their choice isn’t possible. When a child chooses the princess dress for school, our first reaction might be: “No, you can’t wear that.” “Why would you choose that?” But remember… They chose something they love. So we don’t need to make them feel bad about their choice. “I know you really like that dress.” “And I know you wanted to wear it today.” Then we set the limit: “It’s not appropriate for school.” They might cry. They might get upset. And that’s okay. Changing the limit because of the reaction only teaches that the reaction changes the limit. Instead, give them autonomy inside the boundary: “You can wear this one or this one.” And if they can’t choose, you choose calmly. Many times, once children realize the limit is staying, they are ready to participate again. Because the goal isn’t control. children wear princess dresses in my preschool. it is developmentally appropriate and in no way hinders their learning or development. it makes them happy. such a non issue

Basically this has taught me to stop asking my kids questions that I already know the answer to and shift to calm but direct phrasing of what they will be doing. Ex from another video: do you need to go potty before the car? No! Ok we will go anyways. Versus “we are going in the car. We need to go potty first. Let’s go.”

Me: “take off your spiderman suit, put inside your school bag and ask your teacher if youre allowed to wear your spiderman suit in school” and follow up after school if the teacher let him wear the spiderman suit in school and he said no. Since then i dont want have to deal with him wanting to wear the spiderman suit to school.
