As an enmeshed daughter, this is my reality. But now I'm confused what is a 'normal' conversation is like. Since I've never had it otherwise. So 'normal' parents never talk to their child about anything that's happening in their lives? I'm asking genuine questions.

my parents my entire childhood, there’s no reason i should’ve known the intense details about their relationship with each other, and their romantic relationships with others. so insane.

Does this encompass answering direct questions that are asked? I’m always nervous I’m doing this to my kids but they ask me very direct questions that I feel like I must answer honestly…. Like my kids (9 and 19) asked why I was sad about the divorce because their dad told them “we wanted to divorce” and I replied “I do not want a divorce and it’s making me feel rough.” 🥺

This and then the, “I’m not one of your friends, I’m your mother” and then suddenly when I was 25 and just moving out, it was, “you’re my best friend!” Which is it? Bc now I have a hard time knowing how much is too much information, and she can’t help with that.

I think there’s nuance to this. It’s ok to share your life experiences with your children to teach them about life. We’re humans not robots. Obviously it gets weird if manipulation etc is at play. But Kids have questions about the real world and deserve honest age appropriate guidance and answers. Also it can be harmful that any emotional or difficult convo /transaction is labeled as dumping. It creates paths to weaponize what should be normal relational interactions/ learning moments.

My mom would treat me like a friend and therapist as a kid, she would vent about really heavy topics about mental health and money. I grew up feeling really awkward talking about those topics and it caused severe money anxiety. Not fun :(

My mom would do this about HER marriage with my dad, I would tell her that I’m her daughter, and it’s not ok to let me know that stuff because I’m her daughter not her friend. I was 20, and still living with my parents, I’m now 33, and out of my parents house.

This! My mom would discuss their money troubles as if I was a peer since I was probably 6. I’m now 38 and still struggle with spending money and feel I need to take care of them financially.

The only time my mom would pay attention to me was when she was using me as her therapist. Led to a weird dynamic where I craved her vent sessions to feel close to her, while simultaneously resenting her for not showing up as a mother in my life.
