My incredible mum has sadly been diagnosed with a cancer called mesothelioma which can’t be cured. Her treatment plan should be immunotherapy but she’s had really bad side effects to it yet apparently side effects are rare! Everyone reacts so differently, it’s not a one size fits all sadly ❤️

I had leukemia. When I was first diagnosed doctors didn’t know which leukemia I had so they treated me for all the most common childhood cancer. The treatment didn’t help. So they treated me for aml treatment didn’t work. Turns out I had aml m0. So despite them being leukemia they couldn’t be treated the exact same. I think that’s something people don’t understand. Just bc something is cancer doesn’t mean it can be treated like other forms of cancer or even responds the same to treatment. So, even if we had a cure it wouldn’t work for all cancers.

I had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, it has a very well established treatment and is considered the “good” cancer because it’s very treatable. As part of the treatment plan my doctor had to tell me what the aim was and for my cancer it was “cure”. When it comes to cancer, long term remission is often considered a “cure” but I think because it’s not the same as a cure for a virus or bacterial infection, where they are normally cured after a short period of treatment, it isn’t understood or accepted in the same way. Also because there are not only so many cancer variations, but different staging too so two people with the same type of cancer could have very different outcomes depending on how far it’s spread.
