Water can burst when it's superheated which is Called steam explosion which is mentioned in Quran when it says : when seas are made to burst forth (in the day of judgement). Now how a sea can burst forth ? The answer lies in understanding nature of bursting. In nature water bursts when it's superheated or when lava is poured in it which is called steam explosion. So heat is the main energy source to burst the water which aligns with the heat at the day of judgement. This interpretation agrees with Quran as well that on day of judgement sea water will be superheated or will be set on fire.
