The Dyatlov Pass Mystery (1959) Before: In January 1959, nine experienced hikers from the Ural Polytechnic Institute set out on a skiing expedition through the snowy Ural Mountains. A group photo taken before the trip shows them smiling, confident, and excited for the journey. After: Weeks later, rescuers found their tent ripped open from the inside. The hikers had fled into the freezing night with little or no clothing. Their bodies were discovered scattered across the mountainside. Some died from hypothermia, while others had severe injuries, including fractured ribs and skulls. One victim was missing her tongue, which fueled decades of speculation, although experts believe natural decomposition and scavenging likely explain that detail. Today, many researchers think a rare combination of harsh winter conditions and a small avalanche or slab snow collapse caused the hikers to panic and leave their tent.
