Because their soft, curled abdomens are completely unprotected, they will quickly dry out, get attacked by predators or other hermit crabs, or die from stress. New England is home to several distinct native species of marine hermit crabs that thrive in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. Unlike the tropical species commonly sold as land pets, these are strictly aquatic crustaceans found throughout New England’s tide pools, sandy flats, and deeper offshore waters. These native crabs act as essential detritivores, spending their lives cleaning New England’s coastline by consuming decaying organic matter, macroalgae, and tiny particles Because New England lacks native coral reef structures, local hermit crabs rely heavily on the shells of regional sea snails for housing. Smaller juveniles are most frequently found utilizing common periwinkle or oyster drill shells.
