I learned this in a lecture on fairy tales: these often horrible stories (think Hansel & Gretel) are meant to introduce children to real challenges (hunger, being lost, predatory forest dwellers) while having a parent there to relieve the tension (happily ever after). This is a bonding moment, where the child learns that the parent is a safe haven, a guardian that will protect them. This creates secure attachment through „overcoming“ these challenges together narratively.

I also think of this! I say instead when I sing it “when the bough breaks, my baby won’t fall. Because I’ll catch my baby, cradle and all” I don’t sing the other sad ones except for ring around the Rosie and we say “achoo achoo”

Go down a rabbit hole and research nursery rhymes. You will find out that most nursery rhymes all have terrible back stories. The muffin man is based on a serial killer. It’s crazy once you find out.
