I’ve always said a blanket 50/50 doesn’t make sense. It should be proportionate to your incomes if you’re splitting/dividing responsibilities.

You’re supposed to live somewhere with your partner where you’re able to afford it by yourself or where your partner can afford if they make less than you. It would track and even out. Some people come together and automatically think they should get double of everything instead of looking at it like one unit.

Relationships are never 50-50 and it’s because it’s really hard to bring a business mentality into what is meant to be an intimate relationship. If one partner genuinely enjoys cooking and goes grocery shopping, prepares the meals, how will the other partner compensate them? The compensation is enjoying that meal and creating those memories and at the very end, offering to do the dishes. When you bring dollar amounts into the situation, it takes out the magic, the beauty and the ultimate connection that is meant to be fostered.

lol the comments missing the point? 50/50 is fine if you use the remaining money that you saved towards shared goals or even individual goals. Not that 50/50 is bad generally. I think the woman being worse off after the split (or at least having nothing to show for it) creates the narrative that she was done wrong, but if the perspectives were flipped and the guy was worse off the comments would look different (but still wouldn’t address the point you’re making)

I try to explain this to people but they don’t understand beyond their intuitive understanding of the math. “We are splitting the costs of everything.” You are also spending more money, so you are eating what you are ‘saving’ from splitting the bills.
