I want to add black backgrounds to my tanks. I feel like it’ll help things pop. I only have bladder snails but they are the reason my sand isn’t nice and clean like yours don’t do it 😂

These are actually Cardinal Tetras you can tell because the red line goes from nose to tail. Neon tetras will have it halfway along their bodies and Green Neons will have little to no red. They don’t have as much health problems as the typical neon tetra but they are the largest of the bunch so the 9 gallons is going to be a bit tight if you’re wanting to add more either to their school or a different species. It looks like you have some Anubia plants which is a good one to start with but they are epiphytes meaning they need to be either glued or tied to rock or wood and will die if buried in the substrate. If you want to stick with sand only I’d recommend floating plants and steam plants, mosses or other epiphytes like Bucephalandra you want plants that will pull nutrients from the water column instead of the soil since pure sand will not provide enough for heavy root feeding plants. As for bottom feeders I wouldn’t add another fish I would look into shrimps. neocaridina they come in a lot of different colors could maybe be a bit tricky for a beginner and your betta may want to eat them if that’s the case get an amano they get bigger and will not be as easily eaten by a betta. Snails could work too but in a newish tank it might not have a lot to eat yet and you might have to get a dedicated food for it.

Think people might be a little dramitic here. Fish without much pigment like your betta have redder gills because they have more blood vessels there and there is no coloration to cover that. Unless glass running is constant then it can be as simple as a change in barometric pressure. Yes they are cardinals and likely get too big for a 9 gallon. Cardinals are a little finnicky but don't have the inbreeding issues Neon tetras have so are less likely to die off from a stiff breeze. Anubias can be planted in the substrate as long as their rhizome (stem where the leaves sprout from) is above the substrate. roots can be in the sand still.

tetras aren’t good tank mates for betta please do research. your betta is glass surfing and also looks to have swollen gills and eyes. meaning it could possibly have an internal infection. have you cycled the tank? snails are also not going to keep your sand clean and will only make your tank more dirty plus add more bioload. with a 9 gallon you could put a school of Pygmy corys but I really recommend returning the tetras. please do research on the Pygmy corys care as well
