I disagree with this view. Expecting reciprocity is healthy and natural in all relationships. Noticing a lack of it (if there is) gives a lot of information about the relationship and allows people to act/adjust accordingly. Ignoring that completely will likely lead to resentment, burnout, feeling unappreciated and so on

That's how we know their hearts were never in it in the first place... because the first thing I got from this message was simply "if you're expecting something in return don't do it", my heart posture never changed to "well what about me" ...

Honestly, I agree with both sides. I think that if the actions are gonna drain you, then it’s okay to pause and ask “before I make such draining sacrifices for this person, would they or have they ever done the same for me?”. When the answer is “no”, then that would justify the selfishness or warrant you to be transactional imo. Ppl can’t keep pouring into other glasses and never having theirs poured into. It’s draining and exhausting.

If you want reciprocity, just stop. Do things only when you get it. Because if this is in your head you will feel disappointed and you will keep score. If you can’t give and forget that you have given, just don’t give or do stuff for people. Especially you don’t know if it will be reciprocated. Or to be safe, let them know beforehand that you expect reciprocity later.

I don’t keep score and I definitely do for them out of love and kindness, doesn’t matter how many times, but I specifically feel betrayed by the fact that I know they are in the position to reciprocate that one time I need them to but they choose not to.
